Moto S.p.A. signs a contract with Honda Italia and becomes the exclusive partner for the distribution and homologation of Honda motocross conversions to enduro bikes in Italy. The combination of Honda and Montesa or Moto S.p.A. gave rise to the brand abbreviation HM.
The OMC (Officine Meccaniche Casalini) brand is launched. The parent company Casalini, which primarily produced tricycles (sulky), has decided to return to the sports two-wheeler market. Since the name "Casalini" is associated with slow, cabin scooter-like light vehicles, the dynamic abbreviation OMC is to be used to distinguish the new sporty enduro and trial models.
Rod Bush, a successful off-road rider (ISDE medal winner), becomes president of KTM North America. He began his career at Penton, the original KTM importer. 
Thierry Michaud wins his third Trial World Championship with Fantic.
