Mannesmann AG acquires a majority stake in Sachs from the Sachs heirs. The company operates under the name Mannesmann Sachs.
Moto Laverda S.p.A. is forced to file for bankruptcy. A workers' cooperative (Nuova Moto Laverda) is formed for a short period.
Husqvarna's motorcycle division is sold to the Italian Cagiva Group (MV Agusta Group). Production also moves to Varese. A hard core of Swedish engineers does not want to leave Sweden. They then founded the Husaberg brand to continue the Swedish enduro tradition.
Jordi Tarrés becomes world champion on a Beta Trial. This is the first world championship title for Beta.

Vor dem Start der Saison 1987 stürzt Bailey bei einem Fahrtraining schwer. Er versuchte eine Doppel-Sprungkombination (Double Jump), die zu diesem Zeitpunkt kein anderer Fahrer in Betracht gezogen hatte. Der Sturz verletzte sein Rückenmark so schwer, dass er seither querschnittsgelämt ist. Seine aktive Motorradrennkarriere war damit im Alter von nur 25 Jahren schlagartig beendet.
