ATK’s roots date back to 1980, when Austrian engineer and former Grand Prix racer Horst Leitner began developing innovative suspension technology in Laguna Beach, California. The company was officially incorporated in 1984. The name ATK stands for Leitner’s patented "Anti-Tension Kettenantrieb" (Anti-Tension Chain Drive), designed to eliminate chain torque interference with the rear suspension.

In the 2-stroke sector, ATK is renowned for radical innovations. During the 1990s, they utilized Rotax engines with rotary valve induction and introduced the A-Trak system and linkless rear suspension. Later, the brand gained notoriety for the ATK 700, one of the world's most powerful 2-stroke singles (based on Maico technology), legendary as a brutal machine for sand racing and hillclimbing.

ATK officially still exists as a company based in Centerville, Utah, but series production of motorcycles has ceased. After Horst Leitner's era, the company changed hands several times (most recently Frank White). Production of its own 2-stroke models tapered off after 2004, though small batches of the Maico-based "Intimidator" (700cc) and liquidations of Cannondale inventory continued for a time. Today, ATK primarily focuses on parts and service for legacy models.
